Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES LIONEL MCMULLEN James Lionel McMullen passed away at his residence on Monday, July 23, 2007. Jim was born February 28, 1931 to Tom and Marion. He was the second child of five children and the only boy. He was raised on the current homestead. He took his schooling at Lena School until Grade 10, and then had to quit to help run the family farm when his father became ill. He enjoyed curling and playing hockey at a young age, but farming was first and foremost. In 1964, he met Ann Cartwright, a Winnipeg girl; they were married in 1965 and continued to farm until his passing. They raised two children, Debbie and Kelvin. During his life, he square danced for many years, going to conventions in Canada and the U.S. He was an exceptional cattleman, first raising Pure Bred Polled Herefords, then Pure Bred Saler cattle, of which he showed at Brandon and Regina and also in Denver. His goal was to someday have a grand champion, which he finally did. It was a great accomplishment when that happened. As he got older he began to slow down and cut back on the cattle that he kept, but there was always cattle around. When Kelvin started playing senior baseball, Jim became involved with this and worked at the gate for a number of years. He had worked the gate the night before his passing. He was committed to anything he undertook. He enjoyed going to the coffee shop to have coffee with the guys. Jim is survived by his wife Ann, two children, and four grandchildren, three sisters, and their families, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, along with many friends. A memorial service was held August 1, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Wheatland Chapel in Killarney with interment in the family plot in Killarney Cemetery. Killarney and Boissevain Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements. Just A Farmer Just a farmer, you say, And I laughed cause I knew him All the things that farmers Must be able to do. They must study the land, Then watch the sky And figure just when is The right time to plant. To sow and to plant To buy and to sell To go to the market With cattle as well... You know the books that Farmers must keep To pay all those taxes And be able to sleep. And you know the fixin' That farmers must do. When machines like mad monsters Break a gasket or two. I guess when God needed Folks to care for His earth He chose Just Farmers Cause he knew their true worth.
